Choosing your wedding photographer can be an overwhelming process.
We thought it might be helpful to answer some of our most frequently asked questions.
What is the most important part of hiring your wedding photographer?
In our experience, we believe that you must have a rapport with the photographers that you choose. You will be spending a lot of time together. If you can’t relax and be yourself, it will be very difficult to capture the true essence of your wedding. You should choose someone who will make you feel at ease and enhance the quality of your special day, but the bottom line is they have to shoot great, period. If you can’t trust in that, choose someone else.
What are the advantages of hiring a professional photographer?
This is an important question. With all of the technology available today, it seems that anyone with a digital camera can call him or herself a professional photographer. A true wedding professional will capture your day consistently and unobtrusively. Here are a few key qualities to look for when considering a candidate:
1. The ability to take charge of a large group with ease and a sense of fun.
2. Knowledge of all aspects of the wedding day progression, from beginning to end.
3. The ability to work with an event coordinator and/or other wedding professionals.
4. Flexibility and a willingness to assist however needed to make sure that your day is all that you imagined it would be.
5. A style of shooting that both bride and groom truly love, while still adhering to the photographer’s strengths.
We want you to look back on your wedding day as the ‘beautiful beginning’ of your wonderful life together. We strive to capture all of the moments, large and small, for you and your family to remember for generations to come.
What style of photography do you shoot?
We specialize in photojournalism, fashion and still life photography. We have developed our wedding style by fusing all of these. Some of us have extensive experience shooting for modeling agencies, where standards are extremely high. We try to bring those same standards to each and every one of our clients.
What about the ceremony?
It is vital that you demand as much as you can from your venue on how much freedom we have to shoot during the ceremony. This is your special day! It is necessary for them to allow us as much access as humanly possible. If you plan for a bit of extra time before and after the ceremony, we can shoot images that are from the perspective of art and fashion. It really does improve the final results.
Who will be photographing our wedding?
Jay Dixon will normally be photographing the event along with one other photographer. Depending on your needs and the size of the event, we can help you determine what you need, and we have an excellent stable of photographers and makeup artists, to select from. They have been chosen not only for their technical and artistic abilities, but also their shared professionalism and enthusiasm for capturing the wedding celebration.
How many years of experience do you have?
Our experiences are varied, in the 5 to 25 year range of shooting professionally. Wedding photography can be artistic, spontaneous and challenging. We are getting paid to do what we love express ourselves creatively and we get to meet new people embarking on one of life’s greatest adventures! To see a newlywed couple’s pleasure reliving their wedding day through our images makes to job less of one.
Do you shoot Film or Digital?
We normally shoot digitally. It has been a true blessing, as we now have full creative control over the quality of the final images as opposed to being at the mercy of an outside lab. We use state-of-the-art Nikon and Canon brand cameras and equipment, which can produce the highest-quality enlargements, up to 24”x36”.
Are you a full-time wedding photographer?
No, We are full-time photographers that also shoot commercial work and occasionally do jobs for the general public. The idea is to keep our style fresh and vibrant. The last thing you as a client want is someone that is so bored doing what they do, that they mail their effort in.
Approximately how many pictures will be taken throughout our wedding day?
Everyone asks this question! It does depend. We have taken as many as 3,000 images and as few as 500. Generally, we take about 1,500 images. Why so many? We really strive to take advantage of modern technology. We want to capture that special fleeting moment, as well as telling the overall story of your day.
How long will you be at our ceremony and reception?
We will be there from the time you begin getting ready until we have covered your entire day, usually between ten and twelve hours. Arrangements can be made in advance for coverage exceeding twelve hours if needed. We’re proud to say that we have been complimented on being “the hardest-working photographers we have ever seen” by more than one wedding coordinator and countless wedding guests as well!
Do the photographers need to be included in the dinner?
We do. We like to be seated in the dining room, in an area where we have room to access our equipment. This is also an extremely valuable time for getting great candid shots of the bride, groom with their wedding party and guests. We understand this can be expensive, so even if we are not invited to dine, we would like to be seated in the dining area. If this is not possible, please let us know in advance and we can make alternative arrangements.
What about price?
Your wedding will be a magical (and expensive!), once-in-a-lifetime event. You will find a beautiful dress that in all likelihood will be worn only once and then put away. The cake and flowers can be beautiful, but they too, will soon be gone. You will have the memories of your day forever and art for your walls and albums. We want to make sure that they are preserved and documented as fully and as beautifully as they were experienced.
We offer a few wedding packages that should fit your needs and/or budget. Wedding packages all include full day coverage, all of the digital negatives plus full size viewable printable images, and we’ll print up to 200 selected 4” x 6” prints at cost if needed. This runs less than $50. We also include an album credit if you decide that you would like to have one custom designed and printed. There are no hidden charges or per print costs. Period.
What is our payment policy?
We ask for a 20% deposit with your signed contract to secure the date. We ask for a second payment of one-third of the balance at your engagement session, if you choose to have one (or no later than a month prior to the wedding date). The balance can be paid on the day of the wedding or earlier if needed.
Payment terms for wedding albums are 50% upon order with the balance due at delivery.
How far will you travel to shoot a wedding, and what is your travel fee?
We will travel anywhere to shoot your wedding. We're flattered that there are people out of the area that love our work. We have shot weddings out of state and at longer distances within California, so yes, there might be a travel fee. It will all depend on where your wedding is, but please ask!
How far in advance do you suggest we book our date with you?
We run our business on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, so the sooner you book, the more likely the chance you will be able to secure a date with us. Please book as far in advance as you are able to avoid scheduling conflicts.
